In 2011, he climbed Ritter's Route on El Capitan without a rope. In 2015, he completed the first free ascent of "La Dura Dura Chica" (5.14c) on El Capitan without using a rope. He has also completed three more free climbs in Yosemite National Park: "The Incredible Hulk," "Zodiac," and "Klepto".

Caldwell coauthored "Fifty Classic Climbs of North America," was featured in a documentary about the first ascent of "Zodiac," and has climbed several other world-class routes in Yosemite, including his free solo of "La Sirena" (5.14a).

This obsession is a curious thing. Sometimes wonder about the merits of devoting so much of myself to a singular climbing objective. Much of the time it beats me down, leaves me hanging my head in despair. But then there are the moments that bring me to life. When excitement wells up inside my chest in a way that doesn’t happen in every day life. Today my fingertips were cracked and bleeding. I made no progress despite great conditions. I tend to pick objectives that I feel are safe because I know that, in the moment, I always go for it. I have some rules for myself, though: Look for the rock faces without a lot of loose rock.
